1) I saw my nieces and kiddos at school take the princess thing and give new meaning to the word obsess
and
2) I read an article by Peggy Orenstein about her book, "Cinderella Ate My Daughter". Long story short, she argues it gives girls the idea that how a girl looks matters more than who they are...not to mention the whole "needing to be saved by a man" thing.
We were given a Cinderella dress and a bat girl cape by my sister-in-law while we were home. I put my reservations aside, cut the Cinderella emblem off of the dress, trying not to have any character association with it, and put them both in her dress up pile. Looks like this is another battle I have lost :)
